Folic Acid Deficiency Benefit Source

What is folic acid?

Folic acid is the B vitamin, the term folic is coined from the Latin word which means leafy vegetables. Folic acid in the body get converted into folate which is essential in production of new cells and maintenance of DNA and RNA structure.

Folic acid deficiency result in anemia due to folate deficiency. It is treated by folic acid supplements. Consuming too less folic acid result in decrease cellular formation lead to folate deficiency characterized by shortness of breath, mouth ulcer, constant tiredness and loose hair.

Deficiency of folic acid

Folic acid deficiency causes decrease folate present in the body. Folate is essential for cell division and red blood cell production. During deficiency of folic acid formation of DNA, RNA strand got alter resulting production of abnormal sizes and immature red blood cells. It is called megaloblastic anemia.

Symptom of folic acid deficiency are,

  • Persistent mouth sore
  • Early fatigue
  • Tiredness
  • Breathlessness
  • Irritability
  • Palpitation
  • Loose hair
  • Poor growth

People with risk of folate deficiency are,

  • Women during menstruation
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Alcoholism
  • Blood disorders
  • Disturbed metabolism

Folate deficiency is diagnosed by blood test serum folate lower than 3 microgram per liter indicate folate deficiency. It is treated with taking folate supplement and increasing folic acid-containing food.

Folic acid deficiency also result in,

  • Fertility impairment

Folate in body is needed in cellular division, DNA and RNA formation. It is useful in spermatogenesis and formation of ovum. Deficiency of folic acid for prolonged time result in fertility impairment.

  • Neurological disorder in newborn

Folate is essential in converting homocysteine to methionine. Folic deficiency result in neurological problems such as poor cognitive function, dementia.

Benefits of Folic Acid

Folic acid is essential especially during the phase of high cellular division and DNA, RNA involvement such as during puberty and adolescence. Benefits of folic acid are given below,

  • Pregnant Women

During pregnancy there are lots of genetic changes occur by cellular division, and DNA formation. There is need of high folate during this period to avoid delay growth and neurological problems.

  • Fertility

Folic acid required in the multiplication of cells, the process of forming sperm (sperm count and motility), it affects the fertility of individual. In oogenesis folate plays an important role in forming ovum. So it is essential for fertility.

  • Metabolism

Folic acid is a vitamin and essential nutrient required in the utilization and digestion of food. Folate facilitates the digestion and absorption of food into blood. It also nourishes red blood cells and help in developing blood cells.
